Addressing Invitations

The Inner Envelope

The inner envelope always carries the last name only with no address: Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Each adult member of the family receives their own invitation: Miss Jones or Miss Jones and guest. Families with young children who will be invited to the ceremony and reception (children should be at least six years old) should be addressed : Mr. and Mrs. Richard Smith, Sally and Tom.

The Outer Envelope

Always use the guests' full names on the outer envelope followed by the address.
Below are some examples:

Married members of a family:

Mr. and Mrs. John Smith
101 Main Street
Anytown, North Carolina 27000
Adult member of a family:

Miss (Ms.) Ann Jones
101 Main Street
Anytown, North Carolina 27000

Two adult daughters:

The Misses Ann and Beth Jones
               - or -
Misses Ann and Beth Jones
Two adult sons:

The Messrs. Mark and Jim Smith
               - or -
Messrs. Mark and Jim Smith

Additional Guidelines

Abbreviations are never used except for Dr., Mr., Mrs., Jr., Ms., and Lt. when combined with Colonel.  Initials are never used if you do not know the full name. Cities, state and numbered streets are written out, i.e. West Tenth Street.

Addressing an invitation to a widowed woman:

Mrs. Bill Smith

Addressing an invitation to two unmarried people who live together by writing their names on separate lines in alphabetical order:

Outer envelope:

Miss (Ms.) Ann Jones
Mr. Bob Harris

Inner envelope:
Miss (Ms.) Jones and Mr. Harris

When addressing to clergymen, military officers and medical doctors always use titles:

The Reverend William Benson
Dr. and Mrs. William Benson
Captain and Mrs. William Benson

Traditionally women who are doctors, military officers, etc. use their married names for social purposes. However, some women prefer to use their professional title or have retained their maiden name after marriage.  In these cases, put the wife's name above her husbands on the outer envelope.

Assembling and Mailing Invitations ...
